The Universal Rule: Cancel Before Billing
Every streaming service works the same way: if you cancel on or after your billing date, you'll be charged for another month. The exact date matters. Most services bill at the same time each month (if you signed up on April 15th, you'll be billed on the 15th of every month). To avoid a charge, cancel 1–2 days before that date.
This is crucial. Don't cancel on the same day as your billing date. Don't cancel "sometime this week." Cancel 1–2 days early, confirm the cancellation has gone through, then move on.
Netflix: The Standard Cancellation
How to Cancel
- Go to your Account Settings (click your profile icon → Account)
- Navigate to Membership & Billing
- Click Cancel Your Membership
- Netflix will ask you why you're leaving. Answer honestly (optional), then confirm cancellation
- You'll receive an email confirmation. Save this for your records.
What Happens to Your Watchlist?
Your profile and watch history are saved indefinitely. When you resubscribe — even years later — your profile will be exactly as you left it. Your watchlist, your ratings, your continued-from-here timestamps all return. Netflix keeps this data even after you cancel.
When Does It Take Effect?
If you cancel before your billing date, you'll retain access until the end of your current billing cycle. For example, if you're billed on April 15th and you cancel on April 13th, you can watch until April 14th. On April 15th, your access ends.
Max (HBO Max): Slightly Different Process
How to Cancel
- Click on your Profile Icon in the top right
- Select Settings & Account
- Click Manage Your Account
- Navigate to Subscription
- Click Cancel Subscription
- Max will offer you discounts or free trial extensions. Decline these. Confirm cancellation.
Watch History & Profiles
Max stores your profile and watch history indefinitely, similar to Netflix. When you return, your profile, watchlist, and viewing history are intact. You can resume any show from exactly where you left off.
When Does It Take Effect?
Same as Netflix: you'll have access until the end of your billing cycle. Cancel before your billing date to avoid an additional charge.
Disney+: The Family Complication
How to Cancel
- Go to Account Settings
- Select Membership
- Click Cancel Subscription
- Disney+ will show you your next billing date. Confirm cancellation.
Multi-Profile Watch History
If you have multiple profiles on your Disney+ account (for family members), each profile has its own watch history. All of this is preserved when you cancel. When you resubscribe, each family member's profile will have all their watch history intact.
Important: Bundle Cancellation
If you have Disney+ as part of the Disney Bundle (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+), canceling Disney+ will only cancel that service. Your Hulu or ESPN+ subscriptions (if separate) will continue. If you're canceling the full bundle, you'll need to specify that in the cancellation process.
When Does It Take Effect?
Access continues through the end of your billing cycle. Cancel 1–2 days before your billing date.
Hulu: The Tricky One
How to Cancel
- Visit the Account page
- Click on your subscription under Subscription Details
- Click Manage Plan
- Select Cancel Plan
- Hulu will ask for feedback. Answer or skip, then confirm cancellation.
Watch History
Hulu preserves your watch history and watchlist when you cancel. Resubscribe and everything is there. However, Hulu's preservation policy is less reliable than Netflix or Max — if you're away for several years, Hulu may prune your data. For short-term swaps (1–2 months), your data is 100% safe.
When Does It Take Effect?
Hulu is inconsistent here. Some accounts lose access immediately upon cancellation. Others retain access until the end of the billing cycle. To be safe, check your email confirmation after canceling. It will specify your final access date.
Peacock: NBC's Platform
How to Cancel
- Log in and go to your Account Settings
- Navigate to Subscription & Billing
- Click Manage Subscription
- Select Cancel Subscription
- Peacock will offer free trial extensions or discounted renewals. Decline and confirm cancellation.
Watch History
Peacock preserves watch history and watchlist indefinitely. When you return, your profile is exactly as you left it, including your viewing progress on any shows.
When Does It Take Effect?
Access continues through the end of your current billing cycle. Cancel 1–2 days before your billing date to avoid being charged again.
The Nuclear Option: Canceling via App Store or Google Play
If you subscribed through the app store (Apple App Store or Google Play Store), you need to cancel through that platform, not through the service's website. This is one of the most common mistakes people make.
- Apple: Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions → Find your service → Click Cancel
- Google Play: Open the Play Store → Menu → Subscriptions → Find your service → Click Cancel
Your watch history is still preserved because the service tracks it in your account, not through the app store payment method.
Resubscribing Without Losing Your Profile
Here's the good news: you can't lose your profile by canceling. Your data is tied to your email address and login credentials, not to your payment method. When you resubscribe with the same email, everything comes back:
- Watch history and viewing progress
- Saved shows and watchlist
- Ratings you've given
- Profile customization (language, subtitle preferences, etc.)
The only exception: if your service account is compromised or deleted (which is exceedingly rare), you may lose data. For normal swapping and cancellation, your profile is always safe.
Pro Tips for Strategic Cancellation
- Set a calendar reminder for 2 days before your billing date. This prevents you from forgetting.
- Screenshot your billing date when you first subscribe. Services can hide this information.
- Use a password manager to keep track of which services you're subscribed to and when they renew.
- Save confirmation emails from each service showing your cancellation was successful.
- Check your bank statement to verify you weren't charged after canceling. If you were, contact the service immediately.
- Don't cancel on the last day of the month. If your billing date is the 1st and today is the 28th, wait. Canceling on the 30th is safer.
