Apple TV+ Plays a Different Game

Apple's streaming strategy is fundamentally different from Netflix, Max, or Disney+. They release fewer shows, but they release fewer shows for a reason: every single release is meant to be prestigious. There's no reality TV filler, no back catalog bloat, no algorithm-driven content designed to keep you scrolling. Apple TV+ curates like a network used to, but distributes like a streaming service should.

January 2026 is when that strategy pays off. Three major originals debut this month, and all three are the kind of shows that end up in award conversations by spring.

The January Slate

The Shrinking Season 3 returns January 3rd. If you watched the first two seasons, you know this is appointment television. Bill Lawrence's dramedy about grief, therapy, and friendship is one of the few shows that manages to be both hilarious and devastating. Season 3 is expected to run 12 episodes on a weekly schedule. All 12 episodes will air through March, but the first four weeks of January will hook you and convince you to stay subscribed.

Bad Sisters Season 2 premieres January 10th. This Irish dark comedy drama is getting renewed for a second season because the first season was that good. It's a limited series structure (8 episodes), which means you can binge it in one or two sittings if you want. But you probably won't want to — the writing is too sharp, the characters too complex.

The Morning Show Season 4 debuts January 15th. This is Apple's flagship drama. It's got awards credentials, star power, and writing that holds up to rewatching. The fourth season is expected to be the penultimate chapter, so if you've been following the show, you won't want to miss it.

Why Apple TV+ Is Worth January

Here's the thing about Apple TV+: they don't have bad shows. That's not hyperbole. Look at their catalog. Everything is either critically acclaimed or culturally significant or both. They've had zero major failures. That's different from every other service, which scatter excellent content between mediocrity.

Because of that quality consistency, you can subscribe to Apple TV+ with confidence. You're not going to click in and find yourself disappointed by the slate. You're going to find three shows, all of which are worth your time, all of which are produced at a level most networks can only dream about.

January is the perfect month to see that value demonstrated. Three major releases, all in the first month of the year. If you're looking for a New Year streaming reset, this is it.

The Binge Strategy

Unlike previous reports, I'm not recommending you watch everything in the first two weeks and cancel. Apple TV+ is a weekly release service, which means the content is designed to be consumed across the full month. Here's how to maximize January:

This is roughly 10–12 hours of premium content spread across four weeks. That's an average of 2.5–3 hours per week, which is incredibly reasonable.

The Economics Argument

At $9.99 per month, Apple TV+ is more expensive than Netflix's ad tier, but cheaper than Max or Disney+'s standard options. What you're paying for is curatorial confidence. Every episode you watch is going to be worth watching. There's no time wasted on mediocre content just to pad the catalog.

If you only stay subscribed for January, you're paying $9.99 for 12+ hours of prestige television. That's less than a dollar per hour of viewing, which beats theatrical tickets and compares favorably to renting shows individually.

What Happens in February?

Apple TV+ typically has slower months after their January push. If you want to cancel after January 31st, you won't be missing critical content in February or early March. But if you find yourself addicted to The Shrinking and want to follow The Morning Show through its full season, you could justify staying. That's a call you'll make as February approaches.
